Meet Newton Barlow. Skeptical, cool, outspoken.
And wrong. Very, very wrong.
TV boffin, Dr Newton Barlow likes his world rational, his universe ordered, and his life cleansed of every last trace of superstition.
So, when his reputation is trashed, his life stolen and his universe rendered catastrophically pear-shaped, the last thing he wants to discover is that the spirit world he has spent his whole life rubbishing is not only laughably real, it’s about to give him an offer he is in no position to refuse.
Barlow finds himself pitched into a surreal supernatural battle between good and evil; an epoch-trotting clash between the living and the dead, a nail-biting struggle where the protagonists are as peculiar as they are incompetent.
Can Dr Barlow forget everything he ever believed in to save this world… and the next?
★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ‘Different, Stunning, WOW!’

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ‘If you enjoy a tremendous, imaginative, story, told with passion and affection, and if you like laughing until your face aches, your stomach hurts, and your face is wet with tears, then you must buy this book. You will not regret it.’
★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ‘Ghosts, purgatory, pure evil, theoretical physics and greedy developers -- all served up with a wonderful sense of humor and style. What's not to like?’
★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ‘Wow. Amazing read. What an imagination. The first page grabs you and doesn't let go. Newton Barlow is an unforgettable character. Highly recommended.’

At last I have finally found a stand-alone paranormal story that does not force you to buy more books to get a satisfying ending. Most paranormal books I come across are a series & you are forced to keep buying more books in order to get to the end. After saying all the above, I really enjoyed this story—mostly. The only part that gave me pause was the beginning of the book. There was very little dialogue in the beginning—so much so that I almost quit reading the book. You are giving a lot of back history of what went on before the real story begins. Giving a back history would have been fine but I think it could have been a little more condensed and not dragged on for so long. I was starting to get bored & started loosing interest. But once all of this was gotten out of the way, then the book really took off & started to get interesting.
The title is the Unhappy Medium but it was not about mediums per say. I think the title was referring that Dr. Barlow was the "in-between"—he was in between the good guys and the bad guys—he was in the middle—the medium. This was an unusual paranormal story for me because the storyline was different than any paranormal story I have ever read. I really enjoyed the story once it got going. And I loved the good characters in the story because for one, they were so unusual themselves—not what you would expect in a bunch of heroes.
I also loved the ending. It was very satisfying & ended just as I had hoped it would. Even though this is a stand alone story, I would gladly buy more books about these characters if the author decides to write more adventures by these same characters—and as long as each book was a stand alone story. I hate cliff hangers and I hate feeling like I am being forced to buy more books to finish a story but I will buy more of the books if I am not being forced to buy them.
If you love stories about ghosts and of other paranormal subject matter—plus, stories about good vs. evil, you will love reading this book as much as I did.

The Unhappy Medium A Supernatural Comedy Book 1 edition by T J Brown Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
Sorry, I just couldn't get into this book. Despite having read the disclaimer of being slow to start, I thought I could power through and get to a really funny and fast paced story. However, maybe its just me but, I didn't find it hilarious or fast paced. Maybe it was the Brit-speak, but I really didn't like how the author wrote, though it seemed like he wrote well enough. I kept waiting for the "hilarious" and "fast-paced" part to show up. I guess I'm just spoiled for American novels where hilarious and fast paced mean just that. I have read many Brit books and this was just a big slog for me. For people reading it for the supernatural angle, not so supernatural-ly for me either.
It’s rare to find a thriller that is also funny—often the humor makes the thriller part seem campy, or the thriller part causes the humor to fall flat. The Unhappy Medium by T. J. Brown is, fortunately, that rare combination of a thriller that will chill your blood, while you’re laughing so hard at the funny parts you’re likely to wet your pants. In fact, some of the thriller parts might just have the same impact.
Dr. Newton Barlow is a scientist who also happens to be cool enough to be a TV personality. A rational, believe only what can be proven type, he incurs the envy and wrath of the buttoned-down science establishment. When he lets himself get hooked up with greedy business types, he is finally rejected, and then ejected from real science. Down on his luck, he turns to his mentor Dr. Alex Sixsmith, but unfortunately, that worthy dies before he can make contact. Now, ordinarily, that would be the end of the story, but it isn’t—it’s just getting started. You see, Sixsmith contacts Newton, or at least his ghost does. Hyper-rational Newton has trouble accepting this, but when he finally does, he finds himself hip deep in a battle to rid evil from the world, and keep it penned up in Purgatory until it can be expunged.
This book has some parts that are definitely not for the squeamish. Graphically described acts of violence will cause you to look over your shoulder every time a floor board creaks. But, hang in, because the laughs will also come, and you’ll be glad you toughed it out.
I was disappointed when it ended. Not that the ending wasn’t competently handled; I just wanted to read more of Newton’s adventures, so I’m hoping the author is paying attention and will start on the next one—soon!
If I were to sum-up this book might appeal to those who enjoy reading stories where the magical crosses over to the mundane such as the Dresden Files by Jim Butcher or the Nightside books by Simon Green with a dash of Indiana Jones HOWEVER this is a much, much lighter tone than the two aforementioned series. The author has some work to do craftwise but a very good effort is shown here.
Most characters were engaging though the sloppy construction of some characters was frustrating compared to how well crafted others were. The story moved along at a steady clip with a good intermixing of fantastical elements along with the mundane to give the reader solid reference points. The two main characters and their backgrounds were very complete though perhaps the book swerved a little too far to the comedic side at many times from the mid - end of the book.
I felt the author does need to triage their work somewhat better though and be somewhat more ruthless in editing. For example there were areas, particularly at the beginning which could have been greatly compressed. Other parts seemed very sudden like the resolution with the nun (I will avoid spoilers but the readers will understand what I am talking about) was quite too convenient.
Quite a good story and I can see a good deal of promise for the author to grow the characters and lore. There are definitely areas to expand on however I didn't feel the story lacked for these skipped over elements.
